JUAN PEÑA’S WATERCOLOR MATERIALS

BRUSHES: 
      
I will be using the following: (Golden Fleece brushes from Cheap Joes)
  • flat brush (assorted sizes & with scraping handle) 
  • Large flat wash brush,  1-2 inch           
  • Large round brushes, assorted sizes.                  
  • White sable rigger #6 & #4
  • Loose Goose #5
PAPER: 
            
A sketch pad or book of white bond paper 8 ½” x 11” (or larger) for notes and sketches

I will be using the following:  
  • Full sheets of watercolor paper 300 lb. 22”x 30”  (I will demonstrate on a full sheet- students can use 1/2 or 1/4 sheet)
  • D’Arches, Fabriano or half sheets of 25” x 40” single elephant D’Arches 260 lb. (20” x 25”) I will explain at the workshop.                                  (Students can use 140 lb. cold press full sheet (22" x 30") watercolor paper cut into quarter sheets (11" x 15")
BACKING BOARD:
  • A board for your watercolor paper. Tempered one side Masonite board if possible.
  • Board size should be 1” bigger than the paper size you use. (For the workshop, use a board size for a half sheet or quarter sheet)

PAINTS: 

Winsor/Newton or Holbein – no substitutions. 

Winsor/Newton 
  • Winsor red                
  • Winsor blue (reddish tint)
  • Holbein Permanent Yellow Deep
Optional colors:            
  • Holbein Permanent Lemon Yellow             
  • Holbein Permanent Violet          
  • Quinactridone magenta (any brand) 
  • Holbein Chinese white (any brand)      
PALETTE: 
  •  Any white tray, like a Butcher’s tray, plastic mixing tray or white plastic watercolor palette
OTHER SUGGESTED ITEMS: 
  • Four clips or masking tape to hold down paper (plan to hold down the corners of your paper)
  • A soft pencil and a kneaded eraser. 
  • A small sponge, paper towels or toilet tissue and soap. 
  • Two water containers.
  • One plastic bag for garbage.
